Beware of Selling Your Rights

Most creative writers are so eager to sell their work that they don't stop to consider what rights they are selling. The word "Rights" is an indicator of how the publisher can use your work. "Rights" has nothing whatever to do with what you are paid or the copyright of your work.

Editors will usually buy First North American Serial Rights (FNASR). After the buyer publishes the story one time in North America, the author once again retains the rights to it. When you're offering these rights, place "Offering First North American Serial Rights" in the top left hand corner of the document.

One Time Serial Rights - If you are offering the rights for simultaneous submissions, put "One Time Serial Rights" in the top, left corner. This grants the first buyer the opportunity to publish your document one time.

· Second Serial Rights - If you have previously sold the story or article, you will be offering Second Serial Rights to the next magazine. They will be able to publish your work once.

· All Rights - Unless someone is hiring you to develop a work for them, such as developing a course for a school, shudder at the sight of these rights. It means you are selling all rights to the purchaser. You won't be able to publish, copy, transfer or sell that work again. You have no rights whatsoever left.

Work for Hire - This is another one to avoid. Work for Hire can only exist in two ways: Either you have created a document as an independent contractor and you are selling the rights to it, or you are being paid as an employee and you create the work during your work time - which gives your boss all rights.

Non-Exclusive Rights is another undesirable. The rights will revert back to you in a year and you will be able to market it again, but the original buyer can continue using the work and reproducing it in syndication without splitting profits with you.

Exclusive Rights - If you sign away these rights, you just gave the farm away. An example of this would be Associated Content and other like places that assume full rights when they buy your work. You won't be able to use that story or article again. It's gone. Ker-plunk! Never to return again.

· One-time rights - You can sell one time rights simultaneously to as many people as you want. Columnists usually use this right when they sell to various markets.

As you can see, there is only the difference of a hair's breadth on some of these rights. Guard this article with your life and don't sign anything unless you refer to it!

This covers the most prominent rights, but there are many more types.

How I Used The Fresh Papaya (PawPaw):

The fruit was to be consumed ‘As is’ because we always have a small plate of fruit everyday around 5 pm.

I planned on adding a teaspoon of seeds into my Yogurt at lunchtime.

The ‘Coleslaw’ I would add to any Salad (even in a sandwich) as it’s summertime in Oz and we are eating a lot of Salads. Don’t know what I am going to do in the Winter though? If you have any ideas please add them as a comment so everyone can benefit.

I had also planned on five serves per day because I thought it would be better to ‘Drip Feed’ it into me, as my wife thinks I am a ‘Drip’ sometimes anyway – so that should fit.

Monday 6th Feb 2012: My Prostate Cancer Diary.

So here is the problem. I have dismissed Surgery completly and that leads me to Radio Therapy as the only available conventional medical alternative.

My Oncologist want me to have Hormone Treatment to:

  • a: Slow the Growth of the Cancer cells by (basically) chemically castrating me. Ouch!
  • b: Shrink the Prostate down to a smaller target for his magic Death Ray.

I didn’t want to do that with Hormone treatment, but can appreciate why he wants to do that.

So I’m looking into all types of Natural and Alternative medications.

The best I have come up with is PawPaw (Papaya) as there have been quite a few studies with very promising reasults, PLUS it has been… Continue reading Prostate Cancer Diary - My Natural Alternative

Prostate Treatments and Me.

Long time coming since my last post – but I have been kinda busy…. Tests – tests and more tests :-(

So this is the latest:

My Urologist sent me to the Radio Oncologist because I decided I do NOT want surgery. Apparently I can’t have Brachyatherapy (my original choice) because my Gleason Score is 8 – too high, so External Beam Therapy is the only option, even though they only found cancer cells in ONE of the TEN Biopsies they took.

HOWEVER: (I am discovering LOTS of ‘Howevers’), the Oncologist wants me to have Hormone Treatment first to bring my enlarged prostate down in size.

An ‘Average’ prostate is about 40mm – about the size of a small Plum -… Continue reading My Personal Prostate Cancer Treatment Options
