Three D characters are three-part beings. Just what does that mean? It means they will be like real humans, with twitches, procrastination, appointments, problems, a past, present, and future. Are they mentally handicapped? Will their mental state destroy their lives and that of others? This is what it takes to make believable characters.
Supporting roles can be 2-D. Their role will be a supporting one and the reader doesn't need to know every detail about them. However, you need to mentally connect with them as well as you do your 3-D characters.
Do the following exercise just twice (3-D characters only), and that's all it will take. From then on, it will be automatic impulse. Each story will have a good force (protagonist) vs. an opposing force (antagonist). For these two characters, create a long and detailed background of what they are like.
- What kind of attitude do they have
- Tell how they talk
- Describe their inner turmoils
- Tell the emotional problems they have
- What is their point of origin
- What was their childhood like
- What was it like
- Describe their actions
- Describe how they walk
- Do they have unusual mood swings? Somber? Dramatic? Joking? Angry?
- Discuss their family ties
- Tell about their past.
- How do they spend their Holidays
What type of "warts" will your 3-D characters possess? (Warts are something that distinguishes one character from another. It might be a bald head, long hair, odd venacular, emotional problems, a physical problem, tattoos, or whatever you choose. Warts help the reader remember the individual characters.
Let's think about some character's warts. A woman's son approaches his wedding day. The lady is pretty overweight when she goes to order a dress for the wedding. The dress is for her, but she orders it two sizes smaller than she is. Now what do you know about this woman?
- She is proud
- She has high hopes of losing lots of weight
- She is determined
- She is the kind of person who will see things through to the bitter end.
You can use an emotional wart to show almost anything. Let's try another.
A woman who insanely stresses over her varicose veins begins wearing bathing suits in public. Why? This is another classic demonstration of a character change (directly due to the wart), based on the man vs. man conflict. (Search 4 conflicts of writing.) This will make a strong story if done properly.
It isn't difficult to develop a 3-D person. Pretend you met a new friend and you want to know everything about them; now ask them 50 questions; write these down and answer them. Find pictures in catalogs that represent these characters and tape them next to your computer. Now it's time to make a list of the most basic traits, and this will be for your 2-D characters.
The main thing to know about your characters is that they are just like real people, like you and me. Your characters will have the same fears and involuntary thoughts we all have.
How I Used The Fresh Papaya (PawPaw):
The fruit was to be consumed ‘As is’ because we always have a small plate of fruit everyday around 5 pm.
I planned on adding a teaspoon of seeds into my Yogurt at lunchtime.
The ‘Coleslaw’ I would add to any Salad (even in a sandwich) as it’s summertime in Oz and we are eating a lot of Salads. Don’t know what I am going to do in the Winter though? If you have any ideas please add them as a comment so everyone can benefit.
I had also planned on five serves per day because I thought it would be better to ‘Drip Feed’ it into me, as my wife thinks I am a ‘Drip’ sometimes anyway – so that should fit.

Monday 6th Feb 2012: My Prostate Cancer Diary.
So here is the problem. I have dismissed Surgery completly and that leads me to Radio Therapy as the only available conventional medical alternative.
My Oncologist want me to have Hormone Treatment to:
- a: Slow the Growth of the Cancer cells by (basically) chemically castrating me. Ouch!
- b: Shrink the Prostate down to a smaller target for his magic Death Ray.
I didn’t want to do that with Hormone treatment, but can appreciate why he wants to do that.
So I’m looking into all types of Natural and Alternative medications.
The best I have come up with is PawPaw (Papaya) as there have been quite a few studies with very promising reasults, PLUS it has been… Continue reading Prostate Cancer Diary - My Natural Alternative
Prostate Treatments and Me.
Long time coming since my last post – but I have been kinda busy…. Tests – tests and more tests
So this is the latest:
My Urologist sent me to the Radio Oncologist because I decided I do NOT want surgery. Apparently I can’t have Brachyatherapy (my original choice) because my Gleason Score is 8 – too high, so External Beam Therapy is the only option, even though they only found cancer cells in ONE of the TEN Biopsies they took.
HOWEVER: (I am discovering LOTS of ‘Howevers’), the Oncologist wants me to have Hormone Treatment first to bring my enlarged prostate down in size.
An ‘Average’ prostate is about 40mm – about the size of a small Plum -… Continue reading My Personal Prostate Cancer Treatment Options
